ISO 9001 step by step
Today we´ll show you some important steps when implementig ISO 9001 in your business. The Quality Management System proposed by ISO 9001 is an important way of managing a business which focuses on quality.
Currently, more than 1 million businesses are certified around the world.
Step 1 - Define a team work and Study ISO 9001:2008.
This is the first and main step. You must know the requirements and understand how they can apply to your business. There are training courses on the interpretation of ISO 9001 requirements, internal auditor formation, management representative formation, and many others.
We can teach you for free about ISO 9001 requirements, in our website you can find many contents, just clik here to see our comments about ISO 9001.
Step 2 - Schedule your project
Never start a project without a Gantt Chart. It´s necessary to control the time and the project efficacy. You can keep it easy by building it in Excel. If your organization is bigger and your project is more complex and involves different units and adresses, you should try to use more complex project management tools such as MS-Project or Primavera.
What is important? Paying attention to the schedule, being hard on this task will allow you to finish without delays. I have worked with this projects in small businesses for years and I can assure you that concepts like Gantt Chart and Time Management are not considered.
Don´t waste you time! I know that by receiving the certification your business could get new oportunities, customers and business, so let´s make it on time.
Step 3 - Developing a documentation
At this point, you must now develop your documentation which has to contain at least:
A Quality Manual;
Objectives and KPY;
Procedures, click here to see which the mandatory procedures are;
This documentation is the basis to the next step. Without complete and clear procedures you don´t have any chance to implement a QMS.
Step 4 - Trainning and implementing
Now, everyone in the organization must know how to proceed. In other words, it´s necessary to train the people, show them the Quality Manual, make them aware of the Quality Policy, explain procedures and work instructions, explain how to record the activities and how to live in a QMS - Quality Management System.
If you produce fireworks you must follow a great quantitie of rules and procedures, it´s unacceptable not to control the production and the people. Your results will depend on the application of your QMS requirements.
Step 5 - Audit and Management Review
Maybe 2-3 months after the implementation you can check the efficacy of your Quality Management System. It´s mandatory to execute Internal Audits at planned intervals (requirement 8.2.2) and the Top Management must carry out the Management Review (requirement 5.6).
That´s a really important moment. It can show you if your organization is already prepared for the next step.
Step 6 - Certification
There are organizations in each country that are acredited by national controllers organizations.
In Brazil the list is provided by INMETRO.
In USA by IAS.
In U.K. by UKAS.
You must find and contact a certification body in your country and schedule the dates with them.
The duration of an external audit carried out by a certification body follows the table bellow, provided by IAF (International Accreditation Forum).
Step 7 - Time for Celebration!
Yes! You have to celebrate this success! You and your team deserve this. It will make a big difference in future projects in your organization.
